“What’s your zodiac sign?”
I am sure you have confidently answered this question many times before. What if I tell you now that your answer may not be correct? … Shocked?? … Believe me, it is possible.
Let me explain.
Let us suppose that you are a Scorpio. Every time you said this to someone, you must have received familiar reactions like artificial admiration or fear. You must have wondered what the fuss was all about and deliberated over the widespread gospel about Scorpios being passionate, ruthless and vengeful for, in reality, you feel you are none of these!
This may have led you to read popular books on sun signs either for clarification or for convincing yourself that you are a Scorpio. Or, you may have thrown away those books thinking they are all bogus and that astrology is nothing but hogwash.
Well…think about it … a 5000-year old science cannot be just gibberish. Instead, there must be a mistake somewhere that not many have stumbled upon. Before I get into that, it is important to understand what astrology actually is.
Astrology is a derivation of astronomy.
We all know that the earth rotates on its axis. But, many of us do not know that it also wobbles while it rotates, just like a spinning top. This wobble changes the direction of the earth’s rotational axis in relation to the fixed stars, which form the zodiac. The wobble is extremely slow and it takes hundreds of years for even a one degree change to occur. This concept of the gradual shift in the orientation of the earth’s axis in relation to the fixed stars of the zodiac is called precession.
It takes approximately 26,000 years to complete one precession cycle. What it means is that approximately every 2000 years, there is a shift of one zodiac sign. Please remember that the zodiac does not move but the earth’s orientation does.
The ancient Babylonians were the first to record precession of the zodiac. Over the last few centuries, concrete astronomical systems have been put down to include this shift in the earth’s rotational axis. Astrological calculations have changed accordingly. But many Western astrologers have not adopted this system and still follow the traditional zodiacal path in their calculations.
Indian astrology is very much cognizant of the precession phenomenon and accounts for it in their calculations, which involves knowing the ayanamsha (the exact difference in the fixed zodiac used in Western astrology and the moving zodiac used in the Indian system). The Western method of calculation (without precession) is called the Sayana method while the Indian methodology (after subtracting the ayanamsha) is called the Nirayana method. The ayanamsha was zero around the year 293 AD. But, the wobble of the earth has ensured increase in the ayanamsha over the centuries. Currently, it stands at about 24 degrees. A zodiac sign consists of 30 degrees, hence almost 4/5th of the people who believe they are Scorpios, are actually Librans!
Few of the festivals in India happen during the Sun’s ingress into a zodiac sign. Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival is celebrated when Sun enters the zodiac sign Capricorn. The date currently falls on 14th January and over a period of years, it has changed to this date. Pongal and Lohri are the variants of celebration of the same phenomenon of Sun entering Capricorn. Vaishaka Sankranti is the celebration of Sun’s entry into Aries, signifying the New Year. It is also celebrated as Vishu. Similarly festivals like Gudi Padwa, Holi, Thaipoosam, Raksha Bandhan etc are celebrated during either a full moon or a new moon day. The full moon or new moon is obviously according to the Nirayana calculations only. This clearly shows the tradition and astrological precision of Indian system. The knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors is really baffling. It’s interesting how even during the times when there were no telescopes, our ancestors could accurately calculate the Sun’s entry into a zodiac or a precise New Moon or a Full Moon.
NASA’s website clearly shows that the sun enters the zodiac sign of Aries only by the 14th of April. Therefore, most of you, who think you are Arians, are probably Pisceans.
Astrology is based on astronomy and there cannot be a deviation in the actual astronomical position of the sun and the classification of the zodiac. Unfortunately, Western astrology does not recognise this. In my practice of astrology over two decades, I have got accurate results only when using the Nirayana method and not the Sayana method.
Another important thing to understand is that… it is not just the sun sign that makes up a person's psyche. Then, we would have only 12 different types of people in this world and Human Resource managers would have no problem in identifying their core competencies. All Geminians and Librans would be in Sales, Arians and Librans in Marketing, Cancerians would cook for everyone, Virgos would manage the back office and accounts, we would have only Leo bosses and the poor Pisceans would never be promoted! But, the fact is that our mental makeup is determined by the composition of the zodiac signs in which we have our Sun, Mercury and Moon. The Sun rules the self and ego, the Moon rules our emotions and Mercury our mental processes. A permutation and combination of these three creates 186 different types of human beings!
This simply means that if your date of birth is 7th of July 1981, your Sun and Mercury are in Gemini and Moon in Leo. But, you may have believed all along that you are a Cancerian.
M.S. Dhoni was born on this day and it is clear why he thinks on his feet and has amazing reflexes – typical of Gemini. He took to leadership like a duck to water because he is a natural, a la Leo!
Another good example is Salman Khan, born on 27th of December 1965. No, he is not a Capricorn! Salman has the Sun in Sagittarius, Mercury in Scorpio and the Moon in Aquarius. Hence, he is athletic and retains the child-like charm and honesty of a Sagittarian. He is a rebel, has a distinct individualistic style, is a non-conformist and is a good friend, like Aquarians. He never forgives or forgets those who have wronged him and is intense and passionate, like a true Scorpio. So, no, he is not a scheming, conniving, stuffy and politically correct Capricorn!
Your true Sun Sign
Now, let us come back to the question I asked you at the very beginning: “What’s your zodiac sign?” In fact, what is your correct zodiac sign?
To know the correct answer, get your horoscope checked using either computer software (in the Nirayana method) or by a competent astrologer. This book also provides a link which enables you to create your accurate birth chart and know your planetary positions. This way, you can understand yourself better.
Based on the Nirayana methodology and NASA’s positions of planets, there is a need for realignment of dates against popular myth about when sun signs change.
The following table gives you the Sun’s ACTUAL (Nirayana method) entry into the zodiac signs. This is your real Sun sign!
14th April to 14th May | Aries |
15th May to 14th June | Taurus |
15th June to 16th July | Gemini |
17th July to 16th Aug | Cancer |
17th Aug to 16th Sep | Leo |
17th Sep to 16th Oct | Virgo |
17th Oct to 15th Nov | Libra |
16th Nov to 15th Dec | Scorpio |
16th Dec to 13th Jan | Sagittarius |
14th Jan to 12th Feb | Capricorn |
13th Feb to 14th Mar | Aquarius |
15th Mar to 13th Apr | Pisces |
This would be a huge paradigm shift for many. The idea is not to break fondly-held views but to bring forth the truth!
When you read your individual horoscope based on all the other planets like Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Pluto etc., you will be surprised by the accuracy of the insights into yourself.
